Microsoft will adjust Azure pricing as of February 1, 2027

What does this mean for your organization?

Microsoft has announced that the prices of certain Azure services will increase from February 1, 2027. For the Western Europe region, this is an increase of 9%. The change does not apply to all Azure services, and the impact varies by organization. What exactly is changing and how can you prepare for it?

Microsoft Azure continues to evolve. New capabilities, services and investments in the cloud platform are also accompanied by changes in rates. Recently, Microsoft announced that the prices of specific Azure Virtual Machines and Storage services will be adjusted as of February 1, 2027.

Although that date is still a few months away, it can be interesting to look at your Azure consumption now. For certain workloads, you can reserve capacity before the price change and thus possibly keep your current rates for a longer period of time.

What's changing in Azure pricing?

The announced increase varies by Azure region. For West Europe (Amsterdam), a widely used region among Dutch organizations, prices will increase by 9%. In North Europe (Dublin), the increase is 17%.

Not every Azure service will become more expensive. The adjustment applies to specific Virtual Machine series and Storage services. Some VM series are excluded, so the impact depends on the composition of your Azure environment.

As a result, an organization with many affected Virtual Machines may experience a larger cost increase than an organization that primarily uses other Azure services. So a 9% increase in Western Europe does not automatically mean that your entire Azure bill will increase by 9%.

What can you do to limit the price increase?

One of the ways to optimize your Azure costs is to use Azure Reservations. This allows you to reserve capacity for one or three years for certain Azure services at a more favorable rate than with regular consumption-based purchase.

For workloads that you know will continue to run in the coming years, it may be interesting to take out a reservation before February 1, 2027. Depending on the service and the conditions, you can benefit from the current pricing.

However, reservations are not always the best choice. When you expect your capacity needs to change, modernize applications, or phase out certain workloads, flexibility may be more important than a long-term reservation.

The right choice therefore depends not only on the possible savings, but also on your plans for the coming years.

Three points of attention for 1 February 2027

Do you want to know what possibilities there are for your organization? Then these are three steps to start with.

1. Check which services are affected

Map out which Azure Virtual Machines and Storage services you use and in which region they run. Compare this to the announced price changes to determine which part of your environment will be affected.

2. Look at your future capacity needs

Which workloads will remain in use for the next one to three years? And which applications might you want to adapt or replace? This helps you determine for which parts a reservation is interesting and where you prefer to remain flexible.

3. Compare cost optimization options

View your current usage, existing reservations, and expected costs from February onwards. Next, investigate whether new reservations or adjustments to your capacity can provide financial benefits.

What does this mean for your Azure budget in 2027?

The announced price adjustment is a good time to revisit your Azure costs. By providing insight into the expected impact in a timely manner, you can include it in your budgeting for 2027 and assess whether your current design still meets your organisation's needs.

The solution does not have to be complicated. Sometimes reserving existing capacity is enough to limit costs. In other situations, optimizing your workloads offers more advantage.

The most important thing is to research the options before the new rates take effect so that you can make choices that fit both your current use case and your future plans.
