Run AI pilots? Organizations do that in abundance. And when the first results are in, everyone is enthusiastic. Pilot successful! But... what's next?

The reality is that organizations often don't put it. They want to, but they don't know how. Because a chatbot that works fine in a demo is not yet AI that runs safely at scale in production. To achieve something like this, it is crucial that you go from chaos to structure.

But what if the chaos turns out to be everywhere (from the shop floor to the boardroom) because everyone has run all kinds of AI pilots, whether or not through the formal organizational channels?

Putting AI into production... what's stopping you?

First, let's list the direct bottlenecks that most organizations are currently facing:

• Grip on costs
  What does AI really cost? And how do you keep a grip on costs when you are dealing with a proliferation of AI pilots within the organization?
   
• Lack of a common language
  What should AI deliver? Do the board, management and employees give an unambiguous answer to this? And do they understand each other?
   
• The 'right path' to AI
  Are you building a solution that fully meets your requirements? Do you opt for an existing AI tool where you have to make concessions? Or do you wait for the solution you are looking for to come to market?

In practice, it doesn't stop at these 'visible' challenges. There are often structural problems underwater. For example, many organizations are unleashing AI on existing processes. The disappointment is great when it turns out that AI often yields little in such cases. Understandable, but it is important to realize that this is not the right approach.

If you really want to make a profit, seriously consider overhauling your processes. When AI agents stand next to humans, they essentially start working with your employees. Chances are that this will require a redesign of your processes, in which one question is leading: 'Where do people retain control?'

In addition, it is essential that you step out of the 'ivory management tower'. After all, AI belongs to everyone. You therefore want to think very carefully about a policy in which people can design their own processes around AI.

Of course, such a large-scale redesign of organizational processes also involves a bit of adoption: you can only successfully introduce AI technology when employees are on board. That is also a point that is often overlooked.

Don't have a policy yet? Are your guardrails not in order yet? Don't let that stop you. With the advent of AI, the linear process you may be used to (A, B, C, D) is a thing of the past anyway. If you want to successfully bring AI into production, the process will often look like this: you start at C, jump to A, pick up a piece of B at the same time and then take care of D and (again) C.
