Safe and data-driven care for people with intellectual disabilities at Lunet

Healthcare institution Lunet wanted to do more with data and at the same time be better protected against external threats. Especially with a vulnerable target group, it is important to focus on safety and health. This applies to people and technology. In the same period, they started working with Microsoft Fabric and MxDR. Two processes that started separately, but reinforce each other in practice. Jules Schellens, Manager Information Management and ICT, and Nancy Wiggers de Vries-Kuijken, Manager Data & AI, explain how these processes complement each other in practice.

Lunet is a care institution in Southeast Brabant that offers support to people with intellectual disabilities and other complex care needs. They are active at almost a hundred locations with offerings in living, working, learning, daytime activities and leisure. The team consists of more than 2,600 healthcare professionals, supported by around 1,000 volunteers, who work daily on the well-being and independence of their clients. A mission for which Lunet likes to use data. That was the reason to start working with the data platform. And coincidentally, a security process was also started at the same time.

Twiddling your thumbs

Nancy kicks off: "With our old data platform, we ran into limits: in terms of capacity, performance and data science issues. We couldn't really do as much with the platform as we had in mind. We were thinking: what is the next step in the development of the platform? We did that sparingly. AI was not in the picture at all. The old environment could not handle that. When we started working with data science, four out of five people were twiddling their thumbs. This was due to the maximum capacity; Eight hours were needed for a calculation. That is not feasible in this day and age. We really needed a different platform." At the same time, the urgency to better secure the organization grew. Jules says: "We have so much personal data on the network that good security is essential. The simultaneous implementation was by chance. It has always been two separate processes that we deliberately went through separately, because we didn't want one process to slow down the other."

Fellow organization as a compass

Nancy: "We consulted 's Heeren Loo: how did you come to a choice of supplier? They had chosen Wortell. Their selection process was so extensive and in-depth that I thought: I'm not going to imitate that. That's how Wortell came our way. We took about a year to discover each other: what is our need, what is the question and what can Wortell do for that?" Jules adds: "For MxDR we wrote scenarios about what we expect from a supplier. There have been demos about this, including answers and costs. Wortell stood out. The quality of the presentation was good, they listened carefully to what we needed and wanted. The connection with Microsoft was very strong, because we are a Microsoft organization. The fact that we have both the data platform and MxDR with one partner was also an advantage to me."

Building on a strong foundation

"The choices in the design of the MxDR service had a direct effect on the data. So even though the processes ran separately from each other; they touched each other anyway. Wortell advised on how we should set it up," says Jules. Nancy: "The landing zone can be compared to the foundation of your house. That has to be a secure environment and we also needed security aspects from MxDR. That was so technical that we as a data team had to use all our brainpower to be able to follow the explanation. We got through it vigorously, so that we could build afterwards." Jules continues: "Our ICT department consists of five people; We see ourselves as directors. When you see how much you have to set up in the depths of Microsoft, I find that quite intense. I never knew that there was so much under the hood that you could still influence. The implementation, for which funding from Microsoft was used, went smoothly, was right on time and completely to your liking. There were few points on completion. The transfer from project to running business went very smoothly."

The Wheel of Five

"We use Fabric as a management information platform. With Power BI, we make all reports from the data platform available. Think of incident reports, involuntary care and following up on clients' personal plans. We see the first data science issues landing on our plate and have the first AI applications running on Fabric. For example, our organization is running a process on obesity among clients. That is a social phenomenon. Our data team was asked what we could do. We know that all groceries are done at a certain supermarket. We have that data at our disposal and we bring it in with an AI link. We then match the groceries to the Nutrition Centre's wheel of five. In doing so, we make a distinction between categories in which we purchase and label them as a healthy and less healthy choice. It is less healthy if it is not on the list of the Nutrition Center. Our team has never seen shining eyes in our audience so quickly. It was a hit! This allows us to visualize very clearly what the buying behavior is at the supermarket, so that the conversation can be held about it. We are still in the process of further development: we are going to add data from another supplier of pre-cooked meals in order to get a complete picture of what happens to food in a day. It's not just about the costs, but also about numbers and nutritional value."

New perspective on possibilities

"As icing on the cake, we are now thinking about how we can help teams display better alternatives to products they buy. For example: team A buys a lot of white buns, the better alternative would be a whole wheat bun. With AI, we generate what can be extracted from the data to arrive at easy points for improvement. This was not technically possible before. We could not establish the link with AI and offer it structurally as a product. It has to be able to land somewhere. We didn't have the computing power for that with the old data warehouse. With Fabric, it has become much better." And that has a clear effect on Nancy and her colleagues. "It brings a lot of energy to the team. I don't have to add much for inspiration. These kinds of possibilities give a different perspective for the coming years. Our field is expanding: we are moving from descriptive to explanatory dashboards. Other options are within reach."

David van Splunteren and Bertram Kolfhoff, who work at Wortell, explain: "Lunet uses Fabric to experiment. We work from the principle: demonstrate, do together, do it yourself. As a result, Lunet's data team can already do a lot itself. The process took about a year and went live in early 2026, with additional support from our customer team due to leave. It doesn't matter to us if you have a different IT partner; We can work with that. At Wortell, you can choose MxDR and Fabric anyway, even if you have entered into other partnerships."

Vulnerable target group targeted

Jules zooms in on MxDR: "We work with people with intellectual disabilities, among others. This is an interesting target for hackers. Our clients deserve extra protection, as they may be more vulnerable to cybercriminals in some situations. A competitor from the sector shared what the impact of a hack is and you really don't want that. We have to protect our environment and therefore our clients and employees. We cannot avoid placing a very good security shell around our network. You can't work 24/7 shifts with five people. MxDR therefore gives us peace of mind: if something ever happens, Wortell is the first point of contact. They are mandated to arrange everything. My colleagues and I can go home at night without worrying about being called out of bed three times during the night. We went from a secure score of 62 to almost 90 within six months. And that continues to develop, because MxDR does not stop; It's constantly improving and adapting. Due to new functionalities, revised laws and regulations and cybercriminals who continue; It is a continuous activity. We have set up a meeting cycle to review the secure score and determine actions."

Solution-oriented stand

"Wortell gives us a lot of knowledge and supports us in putting it to good use for Lunet's services. On the other hand, Wortell ensures that we can focus on other things, because we can let go of certain things. These are important qualities that I look for in a partner. In today's world, we now blindly trust suppliers. Look at our application landscape; I don't have the impression that I know things better than our suppliers. I don't want that either. That is also how I approach and treat Wortell: they know more than I do and come up with good advice that I can implement in no time," says Jules. Nancy also looks positively at the collaboration of Wortell, which is seen as a strategic, tactical and operational partner. "Because Fabric is such a young platform, it is very much in motion. Together with Wortell, we have discovered: what does this mean for the interior? The process has not been without bumps; that's just part of it. What I have found in Wortell is a partner who is very easy to find. If we really had a problem that needed to be solved or temporarily added a man: no problem. Everything is negotiable and Wortell is always in solution-oriented mode. That helped to guide us through the project. We run the project together and also bear the responsibility together. Human contact has been very important. There is always someone who makes it understandable, which helps our team with direction and execution. We now have to land in a normal world and move the platform forward independently. I never felt like I was alone with my team. Wortell is more than a supplier; It is our sparring partner. You can really expect a helping hand at Wortell."
